Robotic Surgery

Dr. Coussons is nationally recognized as one of the best in the field of minimally invasive gynecologic procedures. Dr. Herb Coussons was the first gynecologist in Wisconsin to perform robotic surgery and has completed over 2500 robotic and other minimally invasive procedures.

He teaches internationally and consults with hospitals and surgeons on quality outcomes and best practices. He successfully completed the first board exams in minimally invasive gynecology the first year the exam was offered in 2021, and has been recognized as a center of excellence in minimally invasive gynecology, being able to complete cases with same day surgery that other surgeons simply cannot attempt.

If you have heavy bleeding, uterine fibroids, endometriosis or pelvic prolapse, then you deserve the best choice in minimally invasive surgery. Less blood loss, lower complications, less pain and faster recoveries are now available because of the precise control and the superior vision

offered by robotic surgery.

Studies show many benefits when the surgery is performed by experienced surgeons with high volume. Often the surgery time is faster and with less complications. The overall cost should be lower than traditional gynecologic surgeries. Most patients go home the same day and recover quickly so they can get back to things that matter most in their life.

Despite advances in minimally invasive surgery over 50% of patients are offered open surgery.  If you have been recommended to undergo an abdominal hysterectomy, seek a second opinion. Dr. Coussons will schedule a phone consultation to review your records and make sure you understand your choices.

  • Outcomes

While the treatment is often beneficial, more expensive laser resurfacing will produce better results. However, microneedling is a more affordable alternative with less down time than fractional laser treatments.

Fractional laser treatments use thermal energy to produce the tiny skin damage that stimulates collagen production. The laser treatments improve fine lines, skin texture and color and may also remove a layer of dead skin to expose fresher, healthier-looking skin.

An excellent sunscreen is necessary with any type of invasive skin treatment. And you should allow healing time before any upcoming events or important appointments.

  • Robotic Procedures

Hysterectomy, or the removal of the uterus, is the most common non-obstetric gynecologic procedure performed in the U.S. The ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed during the surgery.

Myomectomy is a procedure to remove fibroids from the uterus. With the assistance of robotic surgery, surgeons can minimize trauma to surrounding tissue and better reconstruct the uterine wall following the removal of the fibroid, helping to preserve fertility. Patients will have smaller incisions, shorter hospitals stays, less pain and quicker recovery when choosing robotic-assisted minimally invasive myomectomy. In the past myomectomy was not a good choice for menopausal women. Myomectomy it is now possible to maintain the uterus even when childbearing is completed.

Endometriosis resection is a procedure that removes endometrial implants from the pelvis, to help alleviate pain and treat infertility. With the assistance of the robot and advanced imaging, the surgeon uses a special laser or cautery to remove the implants and scar tissue, instead of burning or cauterizing them. This results in ideal treatment as both pain and infertility are improved when the implants are completely removed. With its high-definition 3D camera, the system also provides better views of the woman’s anatomy, allowing the surgeon to remove more disease. Some studies show that laparoscopic surgery without the robot may miss 30 to 40 percent of the endometrial implants leaving them behind resulting in incomplete treatment.

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery can also be used to insert a mesh sling to treat uterine prolapse. This procedure can expect to have less scarring and pain, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to work and regular activities.
